Your assignment is a specific mission and task God has given you and mandated you to fulfill on this earth. Assignment consists of three things: identity, encounter and passion.
IDENTITY
You will never truly know who you are until you know your assignment. Our assignment is embedded in Christ Jesus, therefore when we find Him, we find ourselves and what we are called and assigned to do. Moses didn’t really know who he was until his assignment was revealed. I believe when he was in the palace he struggled with his identity because:
- He looked different from the Egyptians;
- He hated how the Egyptians treated the Jews (Exodus 2:12). I have no doubt that Moses questioned whether this was all life had to offer.
Many are wandering the earth feeling unfulfilled because they don’t know what their assignment is and the reason why they’re here. Dare I say that if people knew their assignment the suicide rates would likely decrease. We often wonder why some people have it all, yet still choose to end their lives. It’s sometimes because the fulfillment and the joy one receives when they discover their God given assignment is lacking. They don’t know who they are, why they’re here, and the value of them being here. Hence, your identity is in your assignment. Moses had it all! He grew up in a palace with luxury, didn’t endure slavery, but yet he was unfulfilled and unsatisfied with his current state. Deep within him, he knew that his mandate wasn’t to be next in line to be King.
ENCOUNTER
You need an encounter! Your encounter with God will reveal your identity, your assignment, how to complete the assignment, and the provision needed to complete the assignment. Moses received these four things after his encounter with God at the burning bush! God gave him reassurance and confidence in his identity after he asked “who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11. God told him WHAT he was sending him to do in Egypt (deliver the children of Israel), gave him INSTRUCTIONS on how to complete the assignment (Exodus 3,4), and gave him the PROVISION he needed to fulfill the assignment (utilize the rod in his hand Exodus 4:2:9).
Prophet Jeremiah similarly had an encounter. It was in his encounter with God that his identity and assignment were revealed. “Before you were born, I knew thee and I ordained thee as a prophet to the nations” Jeremiah 1:5. Like Jeremiah, God already KNEW you and had your assignment all planned out before you were born! If you’re struggling with finding out what your assignment is, you need an encounter.
PASSION
Your assignment can be found in what you’re passionate about. Passion is found in that thing you lose sleep over. It’s found in that thing your heart breaks over (a social issue, problem, etc). You have this urge to do something about it every time you see it. Sometimes you even get angry! If you’ve paid close attention to your walk with God, you’ll realize that now all the things that break God’s heart, now break your heart. You never cared about people going to hell, but now you have this urge to preach the Gospel to others. You didn’t care about other peoples’ issues, but now you constantly intercede for others. In a nutshell, your passion will always be in alignment with God’s will.
When Jesus came, He was so passionate about His assignment that He said “I came down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of Him that sent me” John 6:32. Jesus was very passionate about fulfilling God’s will to the extent of dying! There was never a time where Jesus was not concerned about his Father’s business. If He wasn’t healing, He was teaching, if He wasn’t teaching, He was spending time with His Father! Everything Jesus came on earth to do was strictly to fulfill the mandated assignment that God, the Father, gave to Him. You’ll know you’ve discovered your assignment when you are passionate about it.
START WITH GOD
God is the beginning of everything and the end of everything! Revelations 22:13. If you’re having trouble discovering your assignment, start with Him! He will show you who you are and what you’re called to do! He’ll also supply you with everything you need to complete the assignment successfully. When we find Him, we find everything about ourselves.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Matthew 7:7
