It’s hard to put into words, but there is a place in prayer where a shift takes place, and the heart of man is fully yielded onto God. What can I compare it to? Maybe a warmth…In this space it’s as if human words are hard to find; they don’t seem good enough to describe the depth, the richness of the wisdom and knowledge of our God (Romans 11:33-36).

The indescribable I AM, naming Himself for this very reason, yet still choosing our hearts as His place of dwelling has made it so. A space carved out just for Him to fill, and irreplaceable by all things counterfeit. I have come to find that the Lord our God is indeed a consuming fire (Deut. 4:24). The more of Him I seek for, the more I find I need Him. The more I wait in His presence, the more I find I need to remain and commune… to dwell.

But there is something about this fire that consumes yet does not destroy. I heard the story of its flames around the burning bush, and again around the three Hebrew boys in the burning furnace. We who dwell with God are like Daniel’s friends, having the silhouettes of men and women, engulfed in the fire of the presence of God. He was in the midst of them. People who look at us can see there is a man in there, but the burning flames make us hard to recognize, as we are all conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). Let’s remain in Him then, and keep fanning the flames of steadfast prayer and devotion to our God. For our God is a consuming fire.
